The Andrews’ Family Scrapbook June 15th to 29th - Part 1
In June 1957, a family from Shirley, Croydon travelled to the Norfolk Broads for a two week holiday aboard the motor cruiser “Somari” which was hired from H.E. Woolmer at Oulton Broad via the Bradbeer agency. A wonderfully detailed scrapbook was subsequently put together to document their holiday afloat , a scrapbook that I stumbled across a few years ago for sale on a well known auction website. Sadly, the seller couldn’t give me any details about the Andrews’ Family, but the scrapbook is a lovely record of boating on the Broads in the late 1950s. Along with a written itinerary, it also includes original photographs, postcards, mooring receipts along with maps, pictures and cartoons cut from brochures, guide books and newspapers at the time. It has taken me a while to work out how best to display this online - it is too large for a standard scanner, but I have now managed to photograph its pages and they are reproduced below. There are a few “hidden” items - a fold-out letter, additional text below one postcard and a contemporary guide and map to the city of Norwich. These are highlighted by click-able links to view in a separate window. The handwriting is sometimes a little difficult to decipher, but I felt it ought to be displayed as close to its original layout as possible. It is a lovely piece of history which I hope others will also enjoy too.
