An interesting set of photographs which have been taken from the original glass negatives and appear to be connected to the Shields Family who feature elsewhere within these gallery pages. A large collection of photographs dated to 1903 and 1904, taken by local amateur photographer Donald Shields, were added to Broadland Memories a few years ago by courtesy of Donald’s great nephew, John Jollivet. A couple of years later another collection of glass negatives surfaced, having been found in the loft of a house in Lowestoft, which were also attributed to Donald. I discovered the set below in 2018 and recognised one of the images as being in John Jollivet’s collection online. It featured his mother, Winnifred Shields, at the helm of a boat on the Broads c1909. I was rather surprised to have found the original glass negative from which John’s photograph would have been printed. Once again, these appear to have been taken using a good quality camera and lens and contain enough clues to point to them having been taken by one of the Shields Family too – possibly Archie Shields, who was Donald’s brother and Winnifred’s father.

This young lad bears a striking resemblance to Daniel “Bob” Shields who is seen in earlier photographs taken by Donald Shields. “Bob” was Winnifred’s younger cousin and, later, became well known in the Wroxham area as the local G.P.

I haven’t been able to identify this lady, but wondered whether it might have been Winnifred’s mother, Fanny Shields.

This was taken on the first floor of “The Glade” which was one of the thatched, riverside bungalows lying off Beech Road at Wroxham. The Glade was also photographed c1910 by Donald Shields, captioned at that time as being “Spain’s Bungalow”, so I presume that it must have been owned by family friends.

A sailing cruiser passes The Glade, it’s passage assisted with the aid of a quant pole.

This couple are seen in the previous images and may well have been the owners of The Glade.

A small set of photographs dated to 1908 and 1909 which feature boating trips on “The Dreadnought” taken by a group of young ladies and gentlemen. The original captions are included where present.

“The Dreadnought” – I’ve been unable to find any information on the Dreadnought which has the appearance of a small wherry.

“HMS Dreadnought” – Another shot of The Dreadnought under sail.

I think this must have been taken at Coltishall, the lock entrance seen in the background.

“On The Dreadnought 1908” – A single image dated to 1909 within the collection which are otherwise attributed to 1908.

“On The Dreadnought 1908” – The young ladies of the group, parasols in hand and an older lady accompanying, perhaps as a chaperone?

I’m unsure of the location here but it could possibly be Potter Heigham or Horning, both of which feature elsewhere amongst the photographs.

“At Potter Heigham” – An impromptu riverside musical performance and my favourite photograph of the set!

“The Gull Crew” – This looks as though it was taken just downstream of the Ferry Inn at Horning.

“Buxton Mill” – the Dreadnought obviously travelled on the Upper Bure along the old Aylsham Navigation as far as Buxton. Navigation ceased to be possible beyond Coltishall following the devastating floods of August 1912, the damage caused to locks being deemed too costly to repair.
